Hubby and I just bought a BBQ set. It was on sale at BBQ KIng... 50% off! Its one of those that uses gas and lava rocks. As our townhouse is very close together with our neighbours, we needed something that does not emit too much smoke. So, this lava rocks type BBQ set was ideal.
We had a test run of it yesterday.. and it was FUN! I never did my own BBQ before. I usually only get invited to one. And I don't normally do the cooking either, I made sure I stayed far far away from the pit or my hair would smell of smoke! But since it was our very own pit, I HAD to have a go. And when I did, I refused to let hubby go near hehe... It was really fun... flipping the steaks over, putting the sausages in.. the garlic bread goes in to! Making sure that it is carefully wrapped in foil.... it was nicely baked over the fire.
Our conclusin.... it was great. It was indeed smokeless... the smoke that comes out is from the fat of the meat and the oil that is brushed on it. Steaks were also smokeless... but somehow the chicken was very smokey. I was worried that the neighbors would complain. But it was still not as smokey as charcoal fire. Taste wise, to me... it tastes the same as charcoal fire BBQ. Only it lacks the characteristic burnt charcoal flavour of charcoal type fires.
Cleaning was a breeze. The pit was still as clean as new after we finished. I only needed to wipe the hood and the sides with a damp cloth with some cleaning agents. No need to scrub!! But of course the grill needed a good cleaning and that was it. The lava rocks just needed to be burnt on high flame for about 5 minutes to burn and clean off the fats and oils from the food cooked earlier.
All in all we had a great evening. We invited 3 friends over.. we chatted until late.. forgetting that the next day was a working day..
Therefore today.. I am dam blurrrrrrrr

Just came across this site by accident. BBQ using gas and lava rocks are 'tolerable' when you live in apartments. I still miss the old fashioned charcoal flavoured taste of grills, sausages, chicken wings yum..yumm. If you want a nice salad recipe let me know...he..he..

HI there Anonynmous... thanks for stopping by. Yes charcoal fired BBQ is still the best. This is not a bad alternative tho. The cleaning sure makes a difference. Would love the salad recipe! You can e-mail me at Linz2u2000@yahoo.com
Dudae: Sorry la ... my pit was on trial run. Domino's Pizza number was on standby just in case ;P So my guests were guinea pigs hehe
