Snakey eggs

When I was a little girl  (that wasn't too long ago), I used to call this snakey egg. Snakey... cos the white bits in the half boiled eggs keeps slithering off... like a snake.

Until now I have still not quite mastered spooning this. The alternative is to just dunk the toast into the eggs! Malaysian way of eating it.

Kenny Hills Bakers

We decided to give ourselves a treat to a breakfast outing as we have not done this in quite a while.

Hubby proposed we try Kenny Hills Bakers,  a half shop bakery tucked away at the foot of Kenny Hills. Its a small and really quaint Parisian style cafe with the most awesome croissants I've tasted outside Europe.

Their best seller is the choc croissant and the almond croissant. We tried both and indeed they are so yummy!

Totally recommend this place but seating is very limited so be prepared for a wait if its a busy morning.

The thing about cucur

I can't get the one I ate at Redang Island during my diving trip out of my mind. It was so simple, fulfilling and one of those comfort food that is similar but has subtle differences every different place you have them.

Different people have different special ingredients in it. But it is still a typical malay tea time snack.

I however can never get it right. No matter how hard I try. So I gave up and resorted to the instant Adabi mix and just throw in some onions and spring onions.

And finally now, at home I can have yummy cucur too. Thanks to Adabi :p

Ramadhan begins

I always look forward to Ramadhan. No its got nothing to do with the binge eating or traipsing the pasar Ramadhan. Its just that lovely feeling of peace. I feel very "put together " during this month.

As with lots of people the last few days before Ramadhan is spent indulging on our favourites. Mine was having the salted caramel cupcake at Bisou. What was yours?

Home made pizza ... from scratch!

So I caved in. After months of baking bread that is far too dense, i bought a breadmaker.

Tesco was selling it for RM239. When I first saw it I thought, will this work well?? What kind of breadmaker goes for this price when most starts at RM800 at least. It was a tesco brand. So I decided to give it a miss.

Recently I joined a fb page called Bread maker Recipes. And on this page, besides the beautiful bread that each had successfully made, many had bought that breadmaker from Tesco! And to top that, it was in sale for RM199!!

So on Friday evening,  regardless of what  the Friday was like, I headed for Tesco with Ayden in tow.

I grabbed my trolley and quickly made my way to the offer Isle. It's got to be there! From a distance I spotted it! Only two boxes left! One opened and one still sealed. A lady was lookin into the opened box. I picked up speed and made a bee line for the unopened box!! Grabbed it and tossed it into my trolley. Ayden was quite amused.

As soon as I got home I immediately unboxed it and made a simple white bread. Just throw the ingredients into the bread pan and select Basic and 3 hours later. .. I had perfect white bread! Finally!!

So on Saturday I decided to make pizza for the family. I googled up a simple recipe , threw in the ingredients and selected Dough on the menu. 90 min laterI had an awesome fluffy dough.

I made a red sauced one and sausages one and a mayonnaise with chicken and pineapples one.

My god they both turned out great! I'm so happy!! I guess from now on every Saturday night is pizza night!

Here's how they look like.

Another breakfast post

Ok ok another one on Breakfast. I told you I like my breakfasts.

I do eat strange things. Amongst which, is this one. A stack of pancakes with a sunny side up on top. Drizzled with maple syrup. Yummy I tell you!!

Pictured here also is a glass of freshly pressed pineapple juice.

No need to spend half a fortune at fancy pants cafes that are blooming right now at Klang Valley.

Homemade can be just as good.

Restaurant New Hollywood Ipoh

Best thing about blogging on android, we can blog and post immediately.

We just had lunch at Restaurant New Hollywood in Ipoh. It was already 12.30pm and most stalls were not opened or sold out. It's mean to be a breakfast place as I learned later.

Here's what we managed to get anyway.

This rojak is yummy
Some kind of yong tau foo. Too oily for me.
Yau char kwai and fried lean kow!! My all time fav. The lean kow melts in your mouth!
Fried kueh tiaw. Not too bad. Not that great either.

French toast with grapes and bananas

I'm clearing out my photo album on my phone. Hence the barage of food post. Photos which I was meant to blog about ages ago.

Saturday morning breakfasts are really important to us. It's the time we bond and catch up on lost times together during the week. We either eat at home or go out to eat. Since restaurant prices are si exorbitant nowadays we eat at home more often.

So here's a simple but yummy one. French toast with a drizzle of maple syrup, grapes and bananas.

For myself just a simple bowl of oats in milk, with some yoghurt, a drizzle of honey and grapes.

Healthy,  cheap and yummy!!

Stack of pancakes with Strawberries

The kids love pancakes. It's our Saturday morning routine. On this particular weekend Ayden had a specific request. A stack of pancakes (must be stacked, not cut up into pieces like usual) with Strawberries on top and drizzled with maple syrup.

Yoghurt and granola from Boost

Also in the theme of fitness and healthy bodies, it makes sense to eat well too.

My current obsession: Fresh yoghurt and granola from Boost. Reasonably priced as a good pot of yoghurt is not cheap these days.

RM6.90 at Boost.

Give it a try. Very yummy. Fills me up til dinner. Yes I have it for lunch. I'm strange like that.

Mian Fen Guo - Noodle Shack

I love soupy stuff for lunch. Its my comfort food. My colleagues will ask me "so what you feel like eating? ... don't tell me let me guess....something soupy "

Hehe yes I can be that predictable,  and very boring.

Noodle Shack at Avenue K has awesome soupy stuff. All sorts of pan mee. But looking at the menu, the broth is all the same. Only difference is the topping. I usually go for the tradisional mian fen gou. I also always order the soya bean drink to go with it too. Every bowl of pan mee will come with a fiery hot chilli side condiment. Sure adds some kick to my soupy lunch! Best!

Their menu is real cute. It's a school exercise book.

The queue is real long if you are there at 12.30pm as it is the peak of lunch hour. I usually wait until the crowd dies down a little past one so I have a higher chance of getting a table.

Its a pork free and preservatives free restaurant. I'd recommend it any time.

Home made steak sandwich

After 2 days of over eating today I decided to make something simple but yummy. I saw it on a programme on tv so I can't really take credit for this simple yet restaurant quality (well almost) sandwich.

I bought some top side beef for the steak. Sliced it into thin slices, marinated it with just salt and pepper and pan fried it on a pan.

Meanwhile I sliced a panini into half, spooned some marinara sauce onto the bottom half of the panini followed by some fresh greens. Then add the piping hot steak and then a slice of gauda cheese. I also had a grill going on the fire so by the time I finished assembling the sandwhich it was ready to go onto the grill.

Just a few seconds on each side was enough to melt the cheese and have some wonderful  charred lines on the sandwich.

And that was it! For extra zing you can add some horseradish sauce into the sandwich.

Baking our own bread daily

I don't know how long my bread baking frenzy is going to last but it's been a week and we have not bought a loaf since. So far I've only been making wholemeal bread.

My first try I used the Waitrose bread flour. Last week I was at the market and bought bread flour and wholemeal flour each cost RM3 for 1kg. Dead cheap!  The Waitrose flour cost RM15 for 1.5kg. Which makes only 3 loafs of bread.

I've also been trying a recipe given by my colleague at work and boy is the recipe yummy!! Looks like I will be sticking to this one for some time.

So here's the recipe :

2 cups wholemeal flour
2.5 cups bread flour
1 and a quarter cup of milk
2 tbsp dry milk powder
Quarter cup of brown sugar
2 tsp instant yeast
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter

Mix everything in a mixer with the dough hook until the dough is elastic. Leave to proof for 30min. Knead again and place in a bread tin and proof for another 45min.

Heat the oven at 180deg C and bake for 25 min.

Enjoy!!

Overnight oats in a jar

I've always liked over night oats. Inspired by a post on fb overnight oats in a jar adds to the fun.

So here's how I usually do my oats. I go for rolled oats. The regular ones, not the instant ones. They taste VERY different.

I usually soak about 6 or 7 tablespoons of oats with milk. The milk just about covers the oats. I would soak it the night before.
In the morning I'll add a drizzle of honey, one or two tablespoons of greek yoghurt, some raisins and whatever fruits I have that day.

This particular day I only had bananas. So here's my breakfast. So so yummy and healthy!

Pineapple and apple/orange juice

My latest obsession! Pineapple and orange or pineapple and apple juice.

Is it the pineapple season? Of late there are pf abundance and very sweet pineapples. So i definitely grabbed the chance to juice it. I normally don't like pineapples but juiced with oranges or apples, especially these ultra sweet pineapples... its divine!!

So pictured below is a colander filled with apples and pineapples. The apples are  burried under the pineapples. There were 4 apples and one large pineapples. And you get that amount of juice in the picture.

Made with, of course my Hurom Slowjuicer. Try it!

Breakfast of a working mum

I actually eat better when I am at work. I get lots of “me” time too. The perks of being a working mum.

No I shan’t rant about the negativities of being a working mum. We all know what we have to give up, sacrifice, guilt, and the usual blah blah. So since we are already in this predicament (and can’t get out of it… ok that’s another post altogether), lets not lament about it but look at the positives.

So being at work, I get lots of “me” time. Have a good breakfast with a good cup of coffee. Take my time (when the boss is not around/ or come in early to work) and basically start the day slowly.

There is a good place to have breakfast in the building where I work. I don’t go there that often due to wanting to keep to a decent food budget, but often enough to try most of the things on the menu. Which is not that big a menu, but a good enough breakfast menu.

This morning I had poached eggs on a bed of asparagus with some creamy sauce. Sprinkled with crunchy croutons and two slices of bread. Its almost quite a “light” breakfast. Not too heavy.

Beef Shaksuka and Sweet Corn Salad Recipe

Weekends are hectic for me. Who won’t with three kids under 4! Cooking has to be quick and easy. And not rice as we have that during the week day almost everyday. So I have to come up with something creative.

I have been making a few rounds of Shaksuka over the last few months. There are lots of recipes on the internet and I had been trying the vegetarian version. I find it a little bit too sour and bland for my liking. I like my sauce to be beefy and hearty.

So I incorporated beef into the recipe.

So here’s a home version type of recipe. Not exactly to the gram or inches but you get the picture *wink*

Beef Shaksuka Recipe

About 200gm mince beef. Or whatever is ideal for the size  of your family.

One large Spanish onion chopped.

1 or 2 cloves of garlic, chopped.

Some chopped red, yellow and green peppers.

One chopped tomato. Or more if you like.

One small can of tomato puree, or where I live they come in 160gm size.

4 eggs. Or more if you have more to feed. Ideally one person per egg.

A pinch of cumin

Salt and pepper to taste

I cheat with a little bit of tomato sauce sometimes, just to add on if I feel the taste is not quite there.

Method

Sautee the onion and garlic until fragrant. Add in the beef. Cook it through before adding the chopped red, yellow and green peppers. Add in the chopped tomatoes after that.

Sautee until the peppers are soft. Add in the tomato puree.

Season with salt, pepper and some tomato sauce cheat if you feel the taste is not quite there.

The sauce should be a little watery. I like it this way, so I can dip my bread in it. Some recipe calls for it to be quite dry.

Make little indentations in the sauce and crack your egg over it. Cover and let it cook until you get the consistency that you like for your egg. I like mine runny. Again all the better to dip the bread into!

And that’s it.

I really like the crab and sweet corn salad from Bens. I was suddenly craving for it one day. So I decided to do a real cincai one.

Sweet Corn Recipe

One can of sweet corn

Some cole slaw dressing

Some greens.

Method.

Lay some greens at the bottom of a salad dish

Get your sweet corn on top of that.

Squirt some slaw dressing over it.

That’s it!! I suppose if you have some crab sticks that would go great with it too.

A quick and easy well balanced meal. Not the cheapest. But will do.

Breakfast at Chinoz BSC

On weekends we like to make it a point to go somewhere nice for breakfast.

So about once a week we would try out a nice place. Has to be family friendly of course and would have something that the kids would enjoy.

So last week we went to Chinoz at BSC. Was nice and quiet. Did not have too many people so we had no problems parking our massive stroller. The comfy benches with cushions were great for the twins, which means they don’t need high chairs and were fairly comfortable for them.

Ayden can’t seem to live without roti canai so believe it or not we ordered roti canai for him… at CHINOZ!! I had the eggs ben, the twins had the fluffy pancakes while the daddy had the full on big breakfast. The price was not too bad and the meal comes with a coffee. Everything tastes yummy and the portions were just nice.

We’d definitely come here again for our weekend breakfast outing.

Plus BSC was having a market sale thing going on the ground floor so we had fun browsing.

Making your own baby food

This is where I get overly excited. Making baby food. I don't know why, I just find it so exciting!

My reference has always been Annabel Karmel. I've mentioned her a few times in this blog already. Sh has awesome recipes and guides on making even the most simplest purees to interesting and very different ideas for baby food. I hardly think anyone can screw up baby food with Annabel Karmel. She's got a fantastic ipad app with a voice activated page turning function!

Ok here's one of my favourite recipes. It's not an Annabel Karmel though. It's one of my own.

Baby beef stew

Ingredients:
Beef, cut into cubes
Carrots
Potatoes
Celery
Tomatoes
One large onion
2 cloves of garlic

I did not specify the amount for the main ingredients. Simply because you just throw in the amount according to how much you want to make. You want more carrots, throw in more. Less celery? (Or even no celery), leave them out. In the photos below, I used peas instead of celery. I always like to put as much green vegetables into my baby food. This is the time to stuff them with as much greens as possible without them protesting! But of course you have to disguise the taste with better tasting vegs like carrots, sweet potatoes, or.... in a stew!

Method:

Get out a large pot and boil about a litre of water. Throw in all the ingredients and boil. Cook until all the vegs are soft. Then purée the veg wi the beef stock. As the beef would be quite tough, I don't include them in the purée as I don't want to risk choking the babies. The stock will provide enough iron and beef flavour.

And that's it!

Then I would scoop the purée into muffin moulds, wrap it in foil and then freeze. Once frozen I'd transfer them into a Lock and Lock. For this purée, I serve them with soft porridge.

And there you have it, a very simple nutritious meal that lasts a week!
