Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea took me by surprise. I did not expect what I saw. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. It looks a bit like Australia, but perhaps the more outskirts bit. The sea was surprisingly blue and very close to the capital, Port Moresby. We arrived at dawn and caught the glimpse of the sunrise just as we checked into the hotel. By that time, I was exhausted. Fortunately, the meetings did not start until after lunch. So we had time for a quick snooze.

The country is very undeveloped. But has lots of opportunities. Its problem is road infrastructures. PNG is rich with resources which cannot be exported due to no access roads into the highlands where most of the crops are grown. PNG is famous for its coffee. I had the pleasures of having some while I was there. It was smooth, sweet and very aromatic.

The meetings went well. The deal looks promising. We look forward to something positive.

Food in PN G is good. There was even Nasi Lemak!! We found it at a restaurant in a supermarket. The restaurant is run by a Malaysian. So the whole menu was totally Malaysian! There was Kueh Teaw Goreng, Mee Goreng Mamak, Singapore Laksa, Kueh Teaw Soup and lots more. There was even ice kacang!

Our flight home was delayed 5 hours! Causing us to miss our connecting flight to KL from Singapore. So we had to catch the next one, which is at 6am the next morning! So there was the 5 hour wait at PNG and then another 5 hours wait at Changi Airport. It was a torturous night. I slept on a couch at Starbucks at Changi. I got home with my whole body aching. Air Niuguini only has one airplane! And that only one flies all over the world. So when there is a delay, it sets back quite a number of flights globally! So delays and waiting around (according to a Singaporean businessman I met at the airport) is normal.

So its back to the office with impending reports to write.
