Bedak Sejuk

Bedak Sejuk, made by my grandma

Popo (chinese for my grandma) makes her own bedak sejuk. I asked her how she does it? She replies simply in cantonese ...

Popo: You need to soak uncooked rice for a year (!!)

Me: Wow.... so long ah?

Popo: Ya lah. You must change the water everyday so that it becomes white.

Me: Oooh like that one ah

Basically what she does is soak beras for about 1 year and change the water everyday so that it washes out impurities and the bedak sejuk would be pure and white. Then, what you would get is some sort of paste. When this paste is ready, then you take something small, like the back of a teaspoon and drop this paste onto a try lined with grease paper (or those things you line baking trays when you wanna bake a cake), you get cute little tear drops of bedak sejuk. This can take another year!! So if you malas, you can pour the paste into a tray. Then, dry it out in the sun. Forgot to ask Popo for how long though. When its dry, break it into small pieces (if you had poured it into a tray. Don't break it if you had painstakingly used a teaspoon!!)

The picture above is the lazy version. I guess she poured it out onto a tray and not used a teaspoon. She used to make really nice ones with a teaspoon. I had the opportunity to watch her do that when I was younger. I guess nowadays she has not got that much patience. Oh yes, if you see in the picture, she dried it with some daun pandan. This is to give it a nice smell.

Oh God, this brings so many memories of my own grandma Wan making her bedak sejuk (or tabluk they call it in Terengganu). I couldn't stand the smell of the water everytime she changed it. But I think she cheated a bit - not a year..sometimes 3 months only.

It's things like these that make us remember our roots and the beauty of our heritage. It reminds us that the modern world has lost much, and that maybe they had it better then - when the world was a much simpler and slower place.. and when it took a year to make "Bedak Sejuk".

I miss my grandma so much.

I wish I had time to learn from her. But at least she taught my mother, and so the legacy lives on.

Oh yes, bedak sejuk for what eh?

Min - Beduk sejuk is for beautiful skin :D Smooth and flawless. But for me, I used the bedak sejuk when I had chicken pox, so I don't see how horrible my face was!

Jamie: Tak laku lah..... ada orang dah buat dah.... I think Zaiton (the brand) pernah buat.

wah! 2 years to make that? never knew.

I remember when I was small my mum would mix it with some water and put it on our back when we have black out. Nice cool feeling.

Hmm...Zaiton tak pandai commercialize kot.
