Recently I read in the Star paper at the section where people write in their complaints. There was a parent complaining about school toilets. She complained that toilets at her child’s school were horrifyingly dirty and the school does not bother to maintain it or clean it properly. There were poops in the toilets and puke in the sinks. She observed them over a few days and they were still uncleaned!! Unbelievable!
Thinking back when I was in primary school, which was a good 20 years ago, the school toilets were appalling too. I mean, 20 years down the road and schools are still not bothered to make an effort to ensure that it is clean and well maintained! I would have thought that 20 years down people are more conscious about cleanliness and hygiene. But I guess not!!
I thought we are now more civilized. I guess not either. How do we cultivate the importance of good hygiene when schools do not bother to maintain their toilets? If the toilets are already grubby, people won’t bother to be clean when using them either. And how on earth are you even going to go near the sink if it is full of puke?? I remember in school, as long as I was there, the toilets were always dark. They’ve never changed the broken lights!
Funny how back then, we would just let it slide. I don’t even remember complaining about it to my parents. These things were just so normal, when in fact, it is not and should not be.
But am pleased to see that public toilets in shopping malls are nowadays much cleaner and well maintained. And some even has loo paper too!!

.
my favourite mall restrooms are in 1 utama's new wing!
Dudae: Yea... the ones at the office is quite ok. Sometimes it is wet tho. And sometimes, the toilets are blocked!!! I had the unfortunate experience with one.
Golf is getting frustrating!
nadio: I was there just last night. They are not bad... tho most are squatting ones. So I use the handicapped ones :D
What amazes me are the ones at Megamall, on the floor with the cinema. Although high traffic, they are always clean! See.... if malls can do it, why can't schools???
I used to hold my pee during school days until balik rumah time. Imagine the agony! Memang the school toilet is unbelievably dirty.
caramello: Me too! I made sure that I did not have to pee or poo during school hours. terrible ain't it. And according to the newspapers, thats what loads of kids are doing too. I mean, thats really bad for the bladder.
Didn't any of you have toilet duty? Yes, that's what our school did. Each class is allocated one toilet and the clealiness of that toilet is the responsibility of the class. So apart from the cleaner, we each had cleaning duties on rotation daily. A brill idea to help the issue me thinks.
Hi there anonymous
That is actually a good idea. That would help. But for primary school, thats a bit hard for the poor little ones? Tho allocating one class to one toilet cubicle could work too.
Hi Lin,
In case you're scrambling to look for my comment, it's the one posted on Jan 12, 2006.
My school's toilet 20 years ago was giler dirty too. I dreaded going to the toilet to pee, and would rather tukar baju (for PE / PJ) in the classroom.
Anyway, ..... my son's school in Seksyen 9 Shah Alam - was awarded the "Cleanest toilet in Selangor 2005, under the category of schools and kawasan awam.
Cool, ehh.
